Fundoshi
Re-design of the traditional japanese underwear / 2002

Re-interpretation of the traditional Japanese masculine undergarment. The tie, an item of clothing once used to protect the neck of western man, has now become a pure ornamental accessory. From a simple geometry, like the Fundoshi, it takes its shape as a result of a knot. Here the symbol of the respectable man has slid down to below the belt where it continues its functional and symbolic roles.

La cravate, partie de vêtement autrefois destinée à protéger le cou de l’homme occidental, est devenu un pur ornement de toilette. De géométrie simplissime, comme le Fundoshi, elle prend toute son allure grâce au nouage. Ici ce symbole de l’homme respectable a glissé au niveau de la ceinture où il continue à jouer ses 2 rôles, fonctionnel et symbolique.
